「Ampligen」（rintatolimod、polyI:polyC12U）は、免疫調節作用を持つ二重鎖RNA製剤として、1970年代に合成され、米Hemispherx Biopharma社が研究用試薬として、製造・販売している。rintatolimodは、Toll様受容体（TLR）3作動作用を有するため、自然免疫を活性化して、抗原特異的な免疫反応を誘導できると考えられている。そのため、研究開発中の癌ワクチンやウイルスワクチンのアジュバントとして、研究用試薬のrintatolimodが利用されてきた。

ゲノムの塩基配列にコードされている遺伝子が機能する際には、DNA塩基のメチル化や、ゲノムDNAがコンパクトなヌクレオソームに収納される際の相棒となるヒストン蛋白質のアミノ酸配列の修飾（メチル化やアセチル化など）が影響する。ゲノムの塩基配列は同一でも、このようなDNA塩基配列や蛋白質アミノ酸配列の修飾により、遺伝子の活躍度は異なる。このような修飾を、エピジェネティクス修飾と呼ぶ。
