東京都立駒込病院血液内科の垣花和彦医長らは、同種造血幹細胞移植（造血幹細胞をドナーから患者に移植）した後に発症したステロイド抵抗性・依存性の腸管急性GVHD（移植片対宿主病）の治療に、便菌叢移植（FMT）が役立つことを4例のパイロット研究で見いだした。2016年6月3日に大阪市で開催された第28回大阪造血幹細胞移植疾患研究会で詳細を説明した。概要については2016年3月に名古屋市で開催された第38回日本造血細胞移植学会で最初に発表した。消化管の菌叢（微生物叢）がGVDHと関連していることは、2010年頃から論文発表されるようになり、PubMed論文数は30報近くになっている。その中で、FMTによる腸内菌叢の改善がGVHD対策に役立つことを示した論文はまだ発表されていない。垣花医長らは、今回のパイロット研究の成果を論文投稿中だ。
