東京大学理学系研究科生物科学専攻の濡木理教授らと大阪大学微生物病研究所の伊川正人教授らは、卵子の細胞膜上にあるJUNO蛋白質の結晶構造を決定し、JUNO蛋白質が精子の細胞膜上のIZUMO1蛋白質と結合するメカニズムの一端を解明した。次いで、CRISPR/Cas9システムで作製したJUNO欠損マウス由来の卵子を用いた解析手法で、変異体解析を行い、IZUMO1に結合するJUNOのアミノ酸残基を同定した。哺乳類の受精において必須のステップである卵子と精子の細胞融合のメカニズム解明に寄与する成果だ。Nature Communications誌で2016年7月15日に発表した。さらに9月6日から7日に広島で開催される日本ゲノム編集学会第1回大会で取り組みを発表する。
