さて、iPS細胞の残されたアキレス腱であった、エピジェネティックスの消し残り問題を解決する技術突破がとうとう起こりました。より安全で、品質管理もより容易な、そしてコスト削減も見通せる多能性幹細胞の開発に直結する成果です。また、ES細胞ではなく、受精直後から2細胞に分割するまでの、極めて早期の発生過程とエピジェネティックスの初期化、つまり細胞の初期化の本質を解明する成果でもあります。今回の報告で、核移植による細胞の初期化に関しても、有力な説明が得られたことになったのです。核移植や山中4因子の導入によって誘導された細胞の初期化のメカニズムがとうとう解明されたといえるでしょう。本格的なiPS細胞の次世代再生医療が、この発見から再スタートするのです。
