開発途上国を中心に流行する感染症の治療薬やワクチンなどの開発の支援を目的として設立された基金。途上国の治療薬などの開発は、製薬会社が採算を取りにくく、開発が遅れてきた。金銭的な見返りを求めずに財政支援を行うことで、開発を後押しする。外務省と厚生労働省、国連開発計画（UNDP）の公的機関が5割、製薬企業や米Bill & Melinda Gates Foundationなど18の民間企業や法人が5割を出資する。また、全日本空輸など5社が自社サービスをGHITファンドに無償で提供している。現在のファンドサイズは142億円。
