免疫チェックポイント阻害薬の抗抗PD-1抗体薬の驚異的な臨床成績が確認されたのは、2008年に第I相試験が始まった悪性黒色腫に対するニボルマブであった。米国で開催されている米癌学会年次総会（AACR2016）ではその長期成績にあたる初めての５年生存率が107人の患者のフォローアップ解析をもとに報告された。それによると5年全生存率は34％。最初の臨床試験に登録された3人に１人が５年を生き抜いていることになる。
