株化した癌細胞を2次元培養することにより細胞の増殖や浸潤転移の基本的なメカニズムは明らかになってきたが、生体内で起こっている3次元的な反応とは違うと意識されてきた。その後、3次元培養が取り組まれ、細胞を立体的に捉える方法論が登場してきたが、培養している細胞はあくまで株化された細胞で、生体内の癌組織におけるヘテロジェネイティーを反映していない。本当の癌を理解するための方法論が必要だ──。大阪府立成人病センター生化学部部長の井上正宏氏は、5月28日に大阪府豊中市で千里ライフサイエンス振興財団が開催したセミナーで、研究を進めている癌細胞塊初代培養法の概要とそこから得られた新たな知見を紹介した。
