血中のmiRNAを検出して癌の早期診断を目指す研究プロジェクトが2014年8月に、新エネルギー・産業技術総合開発機構（NEDO）の支援で始動した（関連記事）。昨年開催された学会やシンポジウムでも、血液を採取して疾患の診断を行うリキッドバイオプシー（LB）が数多く取り上げられるなど、今この分野が大学などの研究者や医師、製薬企業から注目されている。プロジェクトで研究代表を務める国立がん研究センターの落谷孝広教授が、2014年1月9日本誌の取材に応じ、LBの研究開発の状況を語った。

2015年のバイオベンチャーのIPO（新規株式公開）を予測する。2014年は米Acucela社とリボミックの2社が東証マザーズに上場した。市場関係者の話を総合すると、2015年は最低でも3社が上場しそうだ。

2011年の福島第一原子力発電所の事故以降、農林水産物の放射性物質汚染に苦しんできた福島県で、2014年産米の検査がほぼ終わった。ベルトコンベヤー式の検査が全量・全袋に行われ、1077万6007袋を検査し99.98％は検出限界（25 Bq/kg）未満。25−50 Bq/kgが1855点（0.02％）、51−75 Bq/kgが11点（0.0001％）、76−100 Bq/kgが1点（0.00001％）だった（2015年1月9日現在）。
