スイス連邦工科大学Zurich校（ETH Zurich校）は2014年12月3日、Institute for Chemical and Bioengineeringに所属するKonrad Hungerbuhler教授とJavier Perez-Ramirez教授が率いる研究グループが共同で、バイオディーゼルの生産から廃棄副産物として出てくるグリセリン（glycerol）から大量の乳酸を作る環境にやさしいプロセスを開発したと発表した。

再生医療新法と改正薬事法である医薬品医療器機等法が11月26日より施行され、資生堂などが再生医療の新規事業に取り組み始めました。その中で頭を悩ませるのが、実は幹細胞の定義なのです。大学の先生にいろいろ聞いても、これが一致しない。リスクベースの規制では幹細胞かそうでないかが、リスク判定の要となっていますから、事態は混迷を深めるばかりです。
