東京農工大学大学院農学研究院の梶田真也准教授らは、低分子のリグニンを分解するSphingobium sp. SYK-6株のリグニン分解反応に関わる遺伝子を網羅的に解析し、そのうちの1つのLigD遺伝子をシロイヌナズナに導入して植物の生育に影響を及ぼすことなくリグニン分子に特徴的なβ-O-型構造の一部を改変することに成功した。英Plant Biotechnology Journal誌（IF5.677）オンライン版で2014年1月9日に発表した。
