遺伝子組換えクモ糸の研究開発を行うスパイバー（山形県鶴岡市、関山和秀社長）は、2014年10月24日までに、小島プレス工業と共同でバイオマテリアルQMONOSの量産化に向け、パイロットラインを整備するための新棟建設を開始した。また、両社は9月26日付けで、Xpiber（山形県鶴岡市、関山和秀社長）を設立した。

スペインAbengoa社は2014年10月17日、米カンザス州南西部でセルロースエタノールを商業生産する新しい先進バイオリファイナリーを正式にオープンしたと発表した（関連記事1）。この第2世代セルロースエタノール・プラントは、カンザス州Dodge Cityから南西約90マイルに位置するHugoton市に建てられた。開所式には米エネルギー省（DOE）のErnest Moniz長官、カンザス州のSam Brownback知事、前米内務省長官のKen Salazar氏、カンザス州選出のPat Roberts上院議員、Hugoton市のJack Rowden市長などが列席した。
