フィンランドChempolis社は2014年9月12日、インド国営企業であるNumaligarh Refinery(NRL)社と竹からセルロースエタノールを生産するプロジェクトをインド・アッサム地域で展開するため覚書(MoU)を交わしたと発表した。両社はインド北東部に位置するアッサム地方で、地元で入手可能なセルロースバイオマスからバイオ燃料となるエタノールと同時に、フルフラールと酢酸を生産する世界規模のバイオリファイナリーを建設するため、共同で開発活動を推進してゆくことに合意した。竹は北東インドにおいて豊富に存在する利用可能な非食用の主要バイオマス資源のひとつであり、成長速度の速い植物である。
