花王が、和歌山事業場内に2011年6月に開所したエコテクノロジーリサーチセンター（ETRC）におけるバイオテクノロジーの研究成果を2014年9月に相次ぎ3件、発表した。同社は研究機関の改組を頻繁に行っている。2014年4月には、基盤研究セクターの生物科学研究所（本所は栃木県）の分室が和歌山に設置された。
