理化学研究所の高橋政代プロジェクトリーダーらは2014年9月12日、滲出型加齢黄斑変性を対象とした自家iPS細胞由来網膜色素上皮(RPE)シートの移植手術を行った。iPS細胞から作製した組織を使用した再生医療の実施は、これが世界初の事例である。
