がん細胞と正常細胞の間で糖鎖パターンの異なったたんぱく質が発現している。これを標的とすれば、副作用の少ない抗がん剤を開発できる。さらに糖鎖研究を加速させる技術にもなるだろう。東北大学大学院医学系研究科地域イノベーション戦略支援プログラム教授の加藤幸成氏は、同氏らが開発した糖鎖を含む抗原を認識する抗体を作製する技術の応用について期待を語る。

米Amyris社は2014年7月31日、フランスTotal社と共同開発し最近ASTM規格に合致すると承認された再生可能バイオジェット燃料ファルネセン（farnesene）を初めて使用したブラジルGOL航空7725便が、フロリダ州OrlandoからブラジルSao Pauloまでのフライトを無事完了したと発表した（関連記事1、関連記事2）。

ゲノム編集は、狙った遺伝子を特異的にターゲティングできる技術であることから、逆遺伝学的解析のツールとして開発が進められてきた。これまで、人工ヌクレアーゼ型のゲノム編集ツールであるTALENをオートメーションで作製するシステムが構築されたり、ヒトの全コード遺伝子およびmiRNAに対するTALENライブラリーが整備されたりと、遺伝子機能の網羅的解析に向けた取り組みも行われてきたが、それらはあくまでも“決め打ち”の逆遺伝学をハイスループット化させようというコンセプトに基づいていた。
