早稲田大学の調査委員会は2014年7月17日、理化学研究所発生・再生科学総合研究センター（CDB）小保方晴子ユニットリーダー（RUL）が早大大学院先進理工学研究科所属時に執筆した博士学位論文に関して、調査結果の概要を公表した。数日以内に、詳細な調査結果が公表される見込みだ。調査結果を受け、早大は今後、対応を検討する。

広島市で開催の日本乳酸菌学会2014年度大会で、2014年7月17日午後、韓国Pusan National UniversityのKun-Young Park教授が「プロバイオティック食品としてのキムチの健康効用」と題する特別講演を行った。キムチ研究所の所長も務めるPark教授は、2年前から推進されている国家プロジェクトで得られた最新の成果を発表した。

国際コムギゲノム解読コンソーシアム（IWGSC）が、コムギ品種「チャイニーズ スプリング」のゲノム配列の概要を解読した成果を、2014年7月18日付のScience誌で発表した。IWGSCは05年に結成され、フランス、オーストラリア、米国、英国、日本などが参加している。日本からは、農業生物資源研究所（生物研）、京都大学大学院農学研究科、横浜市立大学木原生物学研究所、日清製粉などが研究チームを組織して、コムギの21対の染色体のうち、6B染色体の塩基配列の解読を担当している。日本におけるコムギゲノムの解読の予算は、農林水産省の委託プロジェクトで確保している。2011年度から2012年度は「新農業展開ゲノムプロジェクト」で実施し、2013年度からは「次世代ゲノム基盤プロジェクト」で実施している。次世代ゲノムは2017年度までの計画だ。

日本乳酸菌学会2014年度大会が2014年7月17日の9時過ぎから広島市で開幕した。7月18日までの2日間で一般講演は30題が予定され、そのうち16題を企業の発表が占める（大学などとの連名も含む）。発表者が所属する企業数は11社で、そのうち発表演題数が最も多いのは明治の4題だ。知的財産権を確保しやすい独自菌株の研究成果の発表が目立つ。記事後半に各社の取り組みの菌株名などの一覧を掲載する。初日は次世代シーケンサーや第3世代シーケンサーの成果発表も相次いだ。
