米エネルギー省（DOE）のOffice of Energy Efficiency ＆ Renewable Energy（EERE：エネルギー効率・再生可能エネルギー局）は2014年4月15日、 Funding Opportunity Announcement（FOA：研究開発助成金公募）を公示、石油ベース燃料に替わる先進バイオ燃料の生産や、農業残留物および木質バイオマスなどの再生可能な非食用バイオマスから作られるバイオ製品の生産を進展させるため、最大で1000万ドルを拠出することを公表した。

神奈川工科大学基礎・教養教育センターの神谷克政准教授らは、人工物質であるナイロン6を分解する酵素の反応の仕組みを、スーパーコンピュータによるシミュレーションで解明した。筑波大学計算科学研究センターの重田育照教授（2014年3月16日に大阪大学大学院基礎工学研究科の准教授から異動）、兵庫県立大学大学院工学研究科物質系工学専攻の根来誠司教授、フランスUniversity of StrasbourgのMauro Boero教授、理化学研究所計算科学研究機構の松井亨特別研究員らと共同の研究成果を、米化学会（ACS）のThe Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters誌（2012年インパクトファクター6.585）で2014年3月21日付けで発表した。さらに同誌のACS LiveSlidesの掲載対象に選ばれ、今週に掲載された。なお、神谷准教授は筑波大学大学院数理物質科学研究科つくばナノテク拠点産学独連携人材育成プログラムの助教から2013年9月に現在の神奈川工科大准教授に着任した。
