欧州で承認される新薬の3割近くは中小企業がもともとの開発者であり、医薬品の技術革新における中小企業の役割が予想以上に大きいことが欧州医薬品庁（EMA）の調査で分かった。

東京大学大学院新領域創成科学研究科メディカルゲノム専攻/医科学研究所の小林一三教授と古田芳一特任助教らは、「生物がエピゲノム状態を作り替えることで進化する」という「エピゲノム駆動進化」仮説を支持する結果を、ピロリ菌の全メチローム解読で得た。自然科学研究機構基礎生物学研究所/総合研究大学院大学の長谷部光泰教授ら、東大院新領域の菅野純夫教授と鈴木穣教授、 金沢大学学際科学実験センターの西山智明助教と連名で近くPLoS Genetics誌（2012年インパクトファクター8.517）で発表するとともに、川崎市で開かれる日本農芸化学会2014年度大会で2014年3月28日に口頭発表する。この発表は、農芸化学会の一般講演トピックスに選ばれた。
