理化学研究所生命システム研究センター（理研QBiC）合成生物学研究グループの上田泰己グループディレクター（GD）、池田修司研究員（当時）、田井中一貴研究員（当時）、松本桂彦特別研究員らは、天然型の塩基チミン（T）と似た構造を持つ非天然型の塩基5−エチニルウラシル（EU）のDNAへの導入と安価な試薬の化学反応による新しいDNA切断方法を開発した。また、この化学反応を利用すると簡単な操作でDNAの連結もできることが分かった。米PLOS ONE誌で2014年3月19日付け（日本時間3月20日）に発表した。
