筑波大学医学医療系の渋谷彰教授らは、抗生物質の服用によって増殖した腸内の真菌（カビ）が喘息を悪化させるメカニズムを解明し、このメカニズムに基づく抗真菌剤やプロスタグランジンE2（PGE2）の産生阻害剤、M2型マクロファージの活性化阻害剤が喘息を軽快させることをマウスの実験で示した。米University of MichiganのGabriel Nunez教授らと共同で行った成果を2014年1月15日（米国東部時間）にCell姉妹誌である米Cell Host and Microbe誌（インパクトファクター12.609）のオンライン速報版で発表した。抗生物質の投与による腸内細菌のバランスの乱れがアレルギー性疾患を悪化させるメカニズムを世界で初めて解明した成果という。
