大日本住友製薬は2013年12月2日、iPS細胞を利用した再生医療に関してヘリオスと提携契約を締結した。ヘリオスが開発中の滲出型加齢黄斑変性を適応とするiPS細胞由来の網膜色素上皮細胞に関して最大52億円までの開発費用を負担するとともに、再生医療製品などを製造、販売するための新会社を共同で設立する。同社は11月29日に、神戸医療産業都市に再生細胞医療の研究拠点を開設することも発表している。一方のヘリオスの鍵本忠尚社長は、「日米で開発を進めるが、薬事法が改正されたことで日本の方が先になる。数年以内に他家網膜色素上皮細胞の治験開始を目指す」と語っている。
