大正製薬は2014年1月21日、健康食品「大正DHA・EPA」を通信販売の大正製薬ダイレクトで発売した。ω3高度不飽和脂肪酸であるドコサヘキサエン酸（DHA）やエイコサペンタエン酸（EPA）のトリグリセリドを含む健康食品と、DHAやEPAのエチルエステルを成分とする医薬品の選択肢が増えてきた。

フランスDEINOVE社は2014年1月16日、バクテリアDeinococcusをベースとした新しい生産プロセスにより非食用バイオマスから9％のエタノールを生産することに成功したと発表した。バクテリアを用いたプロセスでバイオエタノールの技術的・経済的実現可能性を実証した例としては世界初となり、第2世代バイオ燃料への道を開くものと期待されている。
