バイオジェノミクス（長崎県大村市、本多英俊社長）とウェルネス・ジャパン（東京・港、石川榮男社長）は、「美肌菌バンク」サービスを2013年12月5日に発売した。美肌菌バンクは、顔の善玉皮膚常在菌を増やす化粧品を使用した後に、顧客の額から採取したサンプルから、有用な菌を選抜して拡大培養し、凍結乾燥したのちに肌に塗布するというスキンケアだ。

幹細胞は神経変性疾患の研究や治療の開発への適用で有望視されているが、高齢になってから発症する疾患を正確にモデル化することは、これまで失敗に終わっていた。米Sloan-Ketteringがん研究所は2013年12月5日、Cell Stem Cell誌で人工多能性幹（iPS）細胞を加齢やパーキンソン病に関連する特徴を再現できる神経細胞に変換する新たな手法を発表した。

大阪大学の近藤滋教授が年会長を務める第36回日本分子生物学会年会で2013年12月5日18時から、「生命科学研究を考えるガチ議論」が神戸国際会議場メインホール（座席数650人規模）で開催された。近藤教授が代表を務め、藤田保健衛生大学の宮川剛教授らが中心となって準備を進めてきたガチ議論には、内閣府総合科学技術会議の原山優子常勤議員と元文部科学副大臣・元参議院議員の鈴木寛氏、ヤフーの安宅和人執行役員CSO、それに文部科学省からは川上伸昭政策評価審議官と斉藤卓也タスクフォース室長が近藤教授と宮川教授と登壇し、モデレーターは京都大学学際教育研究推進センターの宮野公樹准教授/総長学事補佐が務めた。宮野准教授は文科省研究振興局参事官（ナノテクノロジー・物質・材料担当）付の学術調査官も務めている。さらに、フロアからは、日本学術会議第二部長を務めている山本正幸・基礎生物学研究所所長（かずさDNA研究所所長から10月1日に就任）が議論に参加した。ガチ議論が終了したのは21時半過ぎ。12月5日が初日だった神戸ルミナリエの終了予定時刻21時を30分過ぎていた。
