米エネルギー省(DOE)傘下のSandia National Laboratories(Sandia国立研究所)は2013年11月18日、DOEのAdvanced Research Projects Agency-Energy(ARPA-E:先進研究計画局)から3400万ドルの助成金が出ているプロジェクトの一環として、Sandia研究所のもつたんぱく質発現、酵素工学およびハイスループット・アッセイの専門知識を活用して、天然ガスを輸送用液体燃料に変換するバイオ触媒技術を開発するプロジェクトを開始すると発表した(関連記事)。
