英York大学は2013年12月22日、化学科のPaul Walton教授とGideon Davies教授が率いる研究チームが、分解が困難なバイオマスからそれを構成している糖類を得ることができる一連の酵素群を発見したと発表、第2世代バイオ燃料開発に重要なステップを提供するものと期待されている。

ＤＡＲＰＡは決勝大会までに、倒れたら自分で起き上がったり、「向こうのバルブを閉めろ」と１回指示すれば一連の動作をすべて実行したりする自律性の向上を各チームに期待している。「今回の予選で災害救援ロボット開発の現状についてベンチマークができた。決勝大会までにどの程度進化するかを見れば、実用化の時期も見えてくるはずだ」とプラット氏はいう。
災害時にロボットが駆けつけて人間を助けるという夢と現実の差は、想像していた以上に大きかった。だが一方で、競技会で出会った人々には、その差を一気に縮めてくれるのではと思わせる情熱と可能性を感じた。
■日本での開催を打診
同じ思いを抱いたのは、記者だけではなかったようだ。ボストン・ダイナミクスやＳＣＨＡＦＴなど８社のロボット企業を相次いで買収したグーグルのアンディ・ルービン上級副社長は、自らのフェイスブックに会場で見かけたロボットの写真や動画を掲載して「すばらしい人々の集まりだ」と絶賛。ボストン・ダイナミクスの創業者マーク・レイバート氏は1960年代に熱狂的なファンが集まった伝説の ...
