米Illinois大学Urbana-Champaign校は2013年10月8日、食品科学・人間栄養学科のYong-Su Jin教授率いる研究チームが、酵母の遺伝子組み換えにより酢酸とキシロースを同時に資化させリグノセルロースからのエタノール収量を約10%改善させることに成功したと発表した。酢酸は植物の葉茎や他の植物組織などリグノセルロース系原料をバイオ燃料に変換する際に出る副産物で、酵母にとって毒性がありセルロースエタノール生産にとって問題であった。
