中国山東大学（Shandong University）の微生物技術国家重点研究所（SKLMT：State Key Laboratory for Microbial Technology）の研究チームは2013年10月31日、Gluconobacter oxydans DSM 2003菌株を使って2,3-ブタンジオールをアセトインに変換するバイオプロセスを開発した研究成果を最新号のBiotechnology for Biofuels誌（6:155, 2013）に「Efficient bioconversion of 2,3-butanediol into acetoin using Gluconobacter oxydans DSM 2003」というタイトルの論文として発表した。
