日本水産は2013年8月1日、2013年ニッスイ秋冬新商品記者発表会を開催し、試食コーナーでは入口近くに「健康」をテーマとしたるコーナーを設け、エイコサペンタエン酸（EPA）の健康効果に関する情報などを訴求した。この秋・冬に日本水産は新商品50品とリニューアル品26品を発売し、新商品は51億円、リニューアル品は115億円の売上高を見込んでいる。この中で、EPAやドコサヘキサエン酸（DHA）など魚油由来のω3脂肪酸の商品も拡充する。

このめずらしい寄生虫性の髄膜炎は、原発性アメーバ性髄膜脳炎（PAM）と呼ばれるもので、「フォーラーネグレリア」（Naegleria fowleri）というアメーバによって引き起こされる。この微小なアメーバは自然発生する原生動物の一種であり、通常は温かい湖や池の堆積層でバクテリアを食べて生きている。

NIFで光子科学部門の副主任を務めるエド・モーゼス（Ed Moses）氏によると、解決すべき問題は2つ。まず、NIFが採用した中心点火方式が抱える、水素ペレットの形状を完全な球形に保つという難関をクリアする必要がある。X線カメラで水素ペレットの爆縮の様子を分析した結果から、融合の開始と同時にペレットの形状が凹凸の多いクローバー形に崩れており、圧縮時に熱と圧力が失われている様子が伺えた。「エンジン内の圧力が漏れているようなもので、圧力の上昇が止まってしまっている」とモーゼス氏は言う。もう1つの問題は、水素ペレットを包む ...
