オランダの研究チームが、被験者が目で見た文字を、脳の後頭葉のfMRIデータから再構築することに成功した。

今回用いられた手法は、視覚刺激を後頭葉においてとらえるというもの。後頭葉は、脳の後部にある視覚処理の中枢であり、この場所と網膜における情報は1対1の対応関係を保つ。
「視覚空間におけるピクセル（画素）は、皮質においても同じようにマッピングされる」と、ファン・ヘルフェン氏はWired UKの取材に対して述べた。簡単にいうと、網膜上のピクセルは、後頭葉においても同じ相対的位置を占めるということだ。
研究では、被験者をfMRIスキャンにかけた状態で、画面にぱっと現れる一連の文字を見せた。筆跡がいろいろに異なる手書きの文字「B」「R」「A」「I」「N」「S」を表示し、それを見たときの後頭葉の反応をfMRIによってモニターした。
