国立精神・神経医療研究センター（NCNP）先進脳画像研究部の花川隆部長は、国際電気通信基礎技術研究所の細田千尋研究員らと共同で、外国語学習によって脳が従来想定されていた以上に柔軟に変化することを見いだした。言語学習のメカニズムに新たな視点を与えるとともに、失語症のリハビリテーション法開発支援など医療の向上にも貢献することが期待される。この成果は、2013年8月21日発行の米国神経科学学会誌The Journal of Neuroscience誌（インパクトファクター6.908）に掲載された。
