しかし当時の米規制当局は、検体として採取した細胞を培養する際、患者の許可を得ることを医師に義務付けていなかった。ラックスさんの死から62年が経過した今、研究の名の下に採取された遺伝学的データの倫理的使用をめぐる基礎作りに子孫たちは取り組んでいる。
当局は7日、ラックスさんの細胞の遺伝データを引き続き、管理の下に行っていくことで遺族側と改めて合意したことを明らかにした。同時にラックスさん自身のゲノム配列も英科学誌ネイチャー（Nature）に発表された。公開した米ワシントン大学（University of Washington）は声明で「ヒーラ細胞は、前世紀最大の医学的な奇跡とみなされている。この細胞のおかげで、科学者らは生きた人体を用いない実験を行うことが可能になった」、また一部のがんワクチン、ヘルペスからインフルエンザ、白血病やパーキンソン病などの治療薬を含む「大きな医学的進歩をもたらした」と述べた。
