マンダムは、頭皮から分泌される脂質成分 (頭皮脂)が頭髪上へ移行してスタイリング剤の整髪性能（セット力、アレンジ力、キープ力）を低下させることを見いだした。脂肪を構成する脂肪酸のうち特にオレイン酸は毛髪上へ移行しやすく、セット力への影響が大きかった。マンダムはこの成果を、2013年7月9日に大阪市で開催された第72回日本化粧品技術者会（SCCJ）研究討論会で発表した。次いで8月10日から11日に神戸市で開催される第31回日本美容皮膚科学会総会・学術大会でも発表する。マンダムはこの知見を基に、自社開発のパウダースタイリング技術を応用した頭皮脂の影響を受けないスタイリング剤「ギャツビー ヘアジャム」を商品化し、8月26日に発売する。

米Eli Lilly社とドイツBoehringer Ingelheim社は2013年7月8日、1型および2型糖尿病の治療に用いる持続作用型の基礎インスリン製剤「LY2963016」の市販承認申請（MAA）が欧州医薬品庁（EMA）に受理されたと発表した。LY2963016は新規のインスリングラルギン製品で、今回の申請はEMAのバイオシミラー製品の申請手順に沿って行われた。

スペインAbengoa社は2013年6月26日、廃棄物をバイオ燃料に変換する技術、いわゆるWaste-to-Biofuels（W2B）技術を利用した実証プラントの稼働を開始したと発表した。このプラントは2万5000tの都市固形廃棄物（MSW：municipal solid waste）を処理できる能力があり、燃料として使用できるバイオエタノールを最大1500kL生産できる。MSWからのバイオエタノール生産は廃棄物管理モデルにおける重要な技術的進展を象徴するものであるという。
