がん研究会がん研究所がん生物部の大谷直子主任研究員と原英二部長ら14人の研究グループは、肥満になると1次胆汁酸を2次胆汁酸へ変換する腸内細菌が増加し、2次胆汁酸により肝星細胞の細胞老化が進み周囲の幹細胞の発がんが促進されることを見いだした。英Nature誌への掲載が決まり、同誌ONLINE版で2013年6月26日付（日本時刻6月27日）で発表した。

農林水産省が2012年度補正予算で20億円を確保した「機能性を持つ農林水産物・食品開発プロジェクト」で、2013年度から2015年度に取り組む農林水産物・食品の一部が2013年6月に決定した。6月24日に医療経済研究・社会保険福祉協会が都内で開いた第29回健康食品フォーラムで、農業・食品産業技術総合研究機構（農研機構、NARO）食品総合研究所の山本（前田）万里・食品機能研究領域長が紹介した。NAROは、農水省の農林水産技術会議が推進する同プロジェクトの運営費交付金を受けた。山本領域長はその実行部隊の責任者を務めている。
