米Harvard大学Stem Cell InstituteのPeng Yi氏らは、マウスにインスリン受容体アンタゴニストS961を投与して作製したインスリン抵抗性モデルを用いて、膵臓β細胞の増殖に関係するホルモンを発見、ベータトロフィンと名付けた。このホルモンをマウスに発現させるとβ細胞の増殖が強力に刺激された。また、ヒト血漿にベータトロフィンが存在することも確認された。新たな糖尿病治療法の開発に結びつく発見の詳細は、Cell誌電子版に2013年4月25日に報告された。
