明治は、仙台市で開かれた日本農芸化学会2013年度大会で2013年3月25日に機能性の成果を発表したLactobacillus gasseri OLL2809菌を商品化した。この乳酸菌をMG2809乳酸菌と名付け、配合したサプリメント「健康のまんなか　MG28」を明治の通信販売「ウェルネス」限定で4月2日から発売した。

北里第一三共ワクチンが開発中の新型インフルエンザワクチンについて、2013年3月末までに承認申請が行われていないことが分かった。同社は2012年9月に開催された厚生労働省の委員会に提出した資料で、2013年3月中に申請するとしていた。第一三共コーポレートコミュニケーション部は本誌の取材に対し、「フェーズIIIは完了しており、現在は申請準備中の段階。2013年度中に承認取得の予定は変更していない」と回答した。
