日本農芸化学会は2013年3月6日、2013年度大会の記者会見を東京大学農学部（東京・文京）で開催し、一般講演の演題2197題から選定したトピックス26題を発表した。トピックスに選ばれた演題の発表者には、3月24日から28日に仙台市で開催される2013年度大会でトピックス賞が贈られる。トピックスに選ばれた26題を記事後半に掲載する。トピックス賞演題の発表者が所属する企業は、新日鉄住金、マルハニチロ、ダイセル、ユニチカ、キリン、ANBAS、キミカ、ブルカー・ダルトニクス、味の素、免疫生物研究所の10社（トピックス集掲載順）。このうち味の素は唯一、2演題が選ばれた（グルタミン酸発酵法と新規腋臭菌株）。また、成果の概要にネオ・モルガン研究所との共同研究で作製された株を利用した旨の発表もある。

米Monsanto社は2013年3月1日、3種の除草剤に耐性のあるワタ品種の承認を申請中で、その製品名が「Bollgard II XtendFlex」であることを明らかにした。「Bollgard II XtendFlex」はRoundup Ready Xtend Crop Systemの最新の製品となり、承認されれば農家に3種の除草剤耐性を備えた雑草防除オプションを提供でき、特にグリホサート（glyphosate）耐性がありコントロールするのが困難な雑草の管理に適しているという。
