英Bangor大学は2013年2月1日、熱帯で「グリーン」バイオ燃料用としてパーム油を採取するためヤシの木を栽培すると気候変動を加速すると、同校の研究者を中心とする国際チームが指摘したと発表した。研究者らは、熱帯泥炭地帯にヤシの木のプランテーションを作ると先史時代の二酸化炭素を大気中に放出してしまうとして、バイオ燃料用作物の栽培で温室効果ガスの排出を削減できるという考え方に疑問を投げかけた。
