肥満は、体重(kg)を身長(m)の2乗で割った数値で示される肥満指数(Body Mass Index:BMI)によって定義される。多様な肥満の病態を、身長と体重の関係のみを抽出して把握するBMIには限界もあるが、簡便に計算できる指数である。
