新薬や新たな治療法の費用対効果を調べ公的医療保険で採用すべきかどうかを決める医療技術評価（HTA）の導入が世界的に進んでいるが、HTAをいち早く取り入れた欧州ではその手法の是非を巡って論争が巻き起こっている。

2012年の1年間に米食品医薬品局（FDA）は39品目の新規医薬品を承認した。2010年21品目、2011年30品目から大幅に増加。53品目だった1996年以来、最も多い数字である。
