ＪＳＴ課題達成型基礎研究の一環として、東京大学 大学院医学系研究科の宮下 保司 教授、平林 敏行 助教らは、サルを被験動物とした実験により、記憶を思い出す時の信号の生成と伝播を担う神経回路を発見しました。

本研究グループは、１つの図形（例えば鉛筆）を手がかりにして、事前に対として記憶している別の図形（消しゴム）を連想する作業を遂行中のサルの側頭葉で、複数の神経細胞群の活動を同時に記録しました。 その結果、手がかり図形（鉛筆）に応答しその情報を保持するニューロン（手がかり図形保持ニューロン）から、別の図形（消しゴム）を思い出す時に活動するニューロン（対図形想起ニューロン）へと特異的に神経信号が伝達し、それがさらに他の対図形想起ニューロンへと伝播していくことによって、記憶想起信号が生成され、増幅されることが分かりました。これにより、私たち霊長類が物体についての記憶を思い出す際に用いられる側頭葉の神経回路とその動作が初めて明らかになりました。
