農業環境技術研究所と東京大学大学院農学生命科学研究科の研究グループは、鉄やマンガン、カドミウムのトランスポーターであるOsNRAMP5の遺伝子に変異を入れると、低カドミウム米を育種できることを見いだした。米科学アカデミー紀要（PNAS誌）オンライン版に2012年11月5日（日本時間11月6日）に発表した。農業環境技術研究所土壌環境研究領域の石川覚主任研究員と東北大学大学院理学系研究科化学専攻の石丸泰寛助教、東京大学大学院農学生命科学研究科の中西啓仁特任准教授と西澤直子特任教授/石川県立大学生物資源工学研究所教授らの成果だ。この研究は、生物系特定産業技術研究支援センターイノベーション創出基礎的研究推進事業「食の安全を目指した作物のカドミウム低減の分子機構解明」（07年度から2012年3月まで）の支援を受けて行われた。西澤教授がこの研究の代表者を務めた。
