NPO法人バイオグリッドセンター関西では、スパコン「京」の産業利用枠を用いて、新薬開発を加速する「京」インシリコ創薬基盤の構築を進めている。その研究代表である京都大学薬学研究科の奥野恭史教授は、2012年10月30日に神戸市で「スパコン京と医療ビッグデータによる創薬イノベーション」との題で講演した。以下、その要旨である。

味の素は、コスト競争力の強化を進めているアミノ酸系甘味料アスパルテームの生産に、バイオ技術を利用した新製法を導入し、2012年8月から本格稼働を始めた。バイオ技術の詳細は明らかにされていないが、エネルギーの使用量を節減して環境負荷を削減できる技術という。

ディー・エス・エムジャパンのLeon Halders社長は、2012年11月1日、オランダDSM社の日本国内市場での展開について記者説明会で語った。DSM社はビタミンや産業用酵素の製造・販売、化合物やたんぱく質などの受託生産を実施しているバイオ製造企業だ。日本における食品用ビタミンビジネスは、顧客の飲料・食品製造企業とのパートナーシップを通じて事業を拡大する。
