理化学研究所の生命システム研究センター（QBiC）と発生・再生科学研究センター（CDB）の研究グループは、リン酸化/脱リン酸化といった可逆的なたんぱく質の修飾から自律振動子を作る仕組みの一端を解明した。理研QBiC合成生物学研究グループの上田泰己グループディレクター、大出晃士特別研究員、理研CDBシステムバイオロジー研究プロジェクト（上田泰己プロジェクトリーダー）のCraig C. Jolley国際特別研究員らが2012年10月18日（日本時間10月19日）、米Cell Reports誌オンライン版で発表する。

マンダムは、自然科学研究機構岡崎統合バイオサイエンスセンターの富永真琴教授との共同研究により、冷感センサーのTRPM8の反応温度が外部温度に依存して大きく変化することを見いだし、人が冷たいと感じる温度が外部温度の影響を受けるメカニズムを解明した。次いでこのTRPM8の反応には細胞膜上のホスファチジルイノシトール4,5-二リン酸が関与していることを突き止めた。さらに、この外部温度の変化に伴うTRPM8の反応温度の変化を応用して、ユーカリ由来成分のユーカリプトールが、暑い時に有効に作用する清涼成分であることを見いだした。2012年10月15日から18日に南アフリカで開催された第27回国際化粧品技術者会（IFSCC）ヨハネスブルグ大会で、この成果を発表した。
