米国研究製薬工業協会（PhRMA）は、アメリカアルツハイマー病財団（Alzheimer’s Foundation of America：AFA）、全米介護連盟（National Alliance for Caregiving）ならびに全米在宅介護・ホスピス協会（National Association for Home Care & Hospice）と共同で、新たに、アルツハイマー病（AD）分野での研究ならびに介護の領域で顕著な功績や貢献を行った団体ならびに個人を表彰する「PhRMA研究ならびに希望賞」（PhRMA Research & Hope Award＝RHA）を設立した。PhRMAは2012年9月7日、RHAの第1回受賞者を発表した。

東北大学多元物質科学研究所（IMRAM）の笠井均准教授らは、京都大学物質-細胞統合システ拠点（iCeMS）の村上達也助教らとの共同研究により、抗がん剤イリノテカンの抗腫瘍活性体であり強い抗がん特性を有することで知られるSN-38の二量体化合物を新規合成し、難水溶化とした後、同化合物を再沈法という独自のナノ化技術を駆使して、抗がん性PND（Pure Nano Drugs =ナノ純薬、約50nm）を作製することに成功した。2012年9月6日に発表した。
