武田薬品工業は2012年7月28日、2型糖尿病治療薬の安息香酸アログリプチン（開発コード：SYR-322）およびアログリプチンと塩酸ピオグリタゾンの合剤の米食品医薬品局（FDA）へ追加データを提出したと発表した。

厚生労働省は2012年7月27日、ジャパン・ティッシュ・エンジニアリング（J-TEC）が開発していた自家培養軟骨「ジャック」の製造販売を承認した。日本で再生医療製品が承認されたのは、同社の自家培養表皮「ジェイス」に続いて2例目。

米Stanford大学は2012年7月19日、生命工学科（Bioengineering）の研究チームが情報生命科学（computational biology）の手法を駆使し世界初となる細菌の完全なコンピュータモデルを完成したと発表した。対象とした細菌は世界最小の生命体と見られているMycoplasma genitaliumで、バイオCAD（computer-aided design）への道を開くことにもなる。この研究成果は最新号のCell誌（Vol 150, Issue 2, 389-401, 20 July 2012）に「A Whole-Cell Computational Model Predicts Phenotype from Genotype」というタイトルの論文として掲載されている。
