「生物製剤の登場がクローン病の治療を大きく変えた」。東京医科歯科大学消化器内科の渡辺守教授（厚生労働省「難治性炎症性腸管障害に関する調査研究班」班長）は2012年5月31日のメディアセミナーで過去10年を振り返った。2002年に抗TNFα抗体「レミケード」が登場（関連記事1）するまでの20年間、ほとんど変化がなかったクローン病の治療は、以降10年で激変した。

米Goodyear Tire & Rubber社やフランスMichelin社に続き、タイヤ世界最大手のブリヂストンが、バイオマス由来の合成ゴムの実用化に向けて成果を挙げていることが分かった。2012年5月31日に都内で開催された「味の素?ブリヂストン共同記者会見」で、ブリヂストンと味の素は、2011年6月に締結した共同研究契約の成果と事業化への展望を発表した。開発を進めているのは、ゴムの木（パラゴムノキ）の樹液から得られる天然ゴム（ポリイソプレン）を模倣した合成ゴム。モノマーのイソプレン（C5H8）を、味の素がC6バイオマスからの発酵法で生産し、ブリヂストンが重合触媒技術を用いて発酵イソプレンからポリイソプレンを合成してゴム特性を評価するという試作を行い、共同で特許を出願した。2013年6月に共同開発の継続可否の判断を行い、事業化検討を進めていく計画だ。
