トマトの全ゲノムを解読した成果がNature誌2012年5月31日号に掲載される。日本時間5月31日2時に報道解禁になった。論文の著者はトマトゲノムコンソーシアム。14カ国の94機関・企業に所属する300人以上の科学者がコンソーシアムのメンバーとして掲載された中で、かずさDNA研究所の植物ゲノム研究部ゲノム解析技術研究室の佐藤修正室長ら10人が最初に記載された。かずさDNA研の他の機関・企業名の掲載はアルファベット順のため、かずさDNA研の寄与がコンソーシアムの中で特段に大きかったことが論文の記載で明確にされた。

2012年5月30日に東京の新宿高島屋で開幕した第5回「大学は美味しい!!」フェアで、福井県立大学は、1689年からしょうゆを醸造している室次（福井市、白崎裕嗣店主）が2012年3月24日に発売した魚醤入り減塩しょうゆ「減塩室次しょうゆ」を展示販売している。福井県立大学生物資源学部の学部長を務める宇多川隆教授らが発明した特許技術「サバ速醸魚醤およびその製造法」（特許出願2010-48810）を活用した商品だ。初日は、宇多川学部長自らがブースで説明していた。
