米Thomson Reuters社（トムソン・ロイター）は2012年4月11日（米国時間）、毎年恒例となっているHottest Researchersと、2011年の最多引用論文の調査結果を発表した。今回は日本人関係では、Hottest Researchersの世界5位に理化学研究所植物科学研究センター（PSC）の篠崎一雄センター長が、また、最多引用論文の世界1位に米University of Texasの小松英一郎教授がそれぞれ選出された。

米Myriant社は2012年3月28日、再生可能原料から価格的に競争力のあるバイオアクリル酸の生産に向け大きな進展を遂げたと発表した。Myriant社は既に米特許商標局（USPTO）にバイオアクリル酸プロセスの特許申請をしており、2012年後半には顧客に製品サンプルを供給できるよう直ちにスケールアップ活動を開始する。Myriant社のバイオアクリル酸は石油由来のアクリル酸と比べ、政府補助金あるいはグリーンプレミアムなしでも価格的に競争力があるという。

BioAmber社、バイオコハク酸からバイオ1、4-ブタンジオールのスケールアップ生産を実施（ニュース(会員限定  from 日経バイオテクONLINE  (2012-4-12 10:55)

米BioAmber社は2012年3月27日、米DuPont社からライセンスを受けた水素化触媒技術（hydrogenation catalyst technology）をスケールアップして、数トン・オーダーのバイオコハク酸を1、4-ブタンジオール（1、4-BDO）、テトラヒドロフラン（THF）およびガンマ-ブチロラクトン（GBL）に変換することに成功したと発表した。これら化学品はポリエステル、ポリウレタン、スパンデックス、生分解性プラスチックなどの生産に主に使用され、BioAmber社はこれら化学品のグローバルな市場規模は40億ドルを超えるとみている。

米University of Louisvilleの研究者が、米国立衛生研究所（NIH）から初めて臨床研究のための研究資金を獲得した。University of Louisvilleで18年間もの間、教鞭をとってきたRoberto Bolli 博士は、NIHから基礎研究で1億ドル以上の研究資金を獲得してきた。Bolli 博士は2012年4月9日、University of LouisvilleのJames R. Ramsey学長とともに、臨床研究で、新規のNIHの研究資金を獲得したと発表した。
