協和発酵工業とキリンファーマの合併から3年。バイオ領域でグローバル・スペシャリティー・ファーマへの飛躍を目指す協和発酵キリンが2代目の社長に選んだのは、「抗体研究では日本の第一人者」（松田譲前社長）との評がある花井陳雄氏（社長就任前は取締役専務執行役員で開発本部長）だった。
