日本分析化学会は、毎年春に開催している分析化学討論会を、今年は2012年5月19日、20日に鹿児島大学工学部郡元キャンパスで開催する。2012年5月9日の記者会見で、講演要旨などを公開した。「産業のチカラ・イノベーションの駆動力となる分析化学」「分析化学における現代の溶液反応化学」「環境影響評価と分析化学」「ナノ分析化学の新展開」の4つの討論主題を決め、51件の主題講演を行うほか、一般講演275件、テクノレビュー講演（企業による発表）7件、若手ポスター発表153件の発表を予定している。

米Neuralstem社は2012年5月8日、脊髄幹細胞（HSSC）による筋萎縮性側索硬化症（ALS）治療の安全性を評価しているフェーズI試験で、以前治療を行ったコホートの患者3人が試験に復帰し、再び治療を受けることについて、米食品医薬品局（FDA）が承認したと発表した。これらの患者は、前回の治療で腰部に幹細胞移植を受けているが、2回目の治療では頸部に移植を受ける計画だ（関連記事）。
